About Becky
I'm an Emergency Medicine Registrar who has never really settled down. I'm currently a Medical Officer for the British Antarctic Survey and will be the base doctor at King Edward Point (KEP) South Georgia, 54 Degrees South.
I went to medical school in Newcastle and then onto Foundation and Core EM training in the Northern region. I've been fortunate to live in some beautiful places during my training - starting off in Newcastle/Gateshead then moving to lovely Yarm in North Yorkshire, and then the village of Wetheral on the banks of the River Eden in Cumbria.
Most recently I've been living and working in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand and making the most of the leisure and travel opportunities, not to mention the wine!
Working as a doctor for BAS was always one of those 'wow, that would be awesome, but it'd never be me' kind of jobs I saw advertised as a student in the BMJ. I cut the advert out and stuck it on my cork noticeboard as something to think about. As I packed up to move to NZ, this little sunbleached and shrivelled paper caught my eye again. Twelve months on and I found myself jetlagged in Plymouth explaining why I think alcohol is important on Antarctic bases, and two years on from that packing day I will be in South Georgia as the BAS base doctor.
PS The photo above is actually Norway where I first learnt to ski....on skinny skis with old-school free heel cable bindings! Highly recommended and stunningly beautiful.
